THEME: BROKEN WALLS

ONI TOMIWA OLAREWANJU

Title; BROKEN WALLS

Deafening gunshots in the air
This wall falls
Like debris,
Broken into pieces.

Guards now sit
On blood stained thrones
Of a nation
Thrown into darkness.

Violent bayonets
Tearing apart
The soul of nationalism
And the hopes of democracy.

Armed combatants linger
In the cracks
Awaiting sacrificial lambs
To atone the sins
Of rickety civilians.

Streets paintted with fear
Of crying rifles.
For then,
The law becomes a male goat
Roasted with series
Of paralysed junta(s)

WAKCHIN NENGAK

Title; BROKEN WALLS

the walls of our land were built in serenity
& painted with hues of harmony
as roles were shuffled without discord.
& these walls - were piles of sturdy bricks that made us one,
beneath appointed honchos.
before black bloody putschist rend it like a pile of fickle sun-burnt ceramics
in an avarice quest to clutch power.
just after beige hands let us have a taste of free polity.
then, even gentle caudillos got killed by timon cocks
& later more boot-wearing honchos ousted democracy,
& all we had were swathes of brutes ruling us with iron claws and guns.
then, the walls of our unanimous country,
the very fence we built with sweaty faces were
cracked,
pushing us into vicious bouts of ethnic unrest & hatred.
