NIGERIA FG ANNOUNCES JUNE 12 AS DEMOCRACY DAY, AWARDS ABIOLA GCFR; A LATE BUT VALID MOVE.

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday declared June 12 as Democracy Day and awarding the late M. K. O. Abiola the highest honour in the country, GCFR.  The move is a laudable one and it has been long overdue.

Celebrating May 29 as the Nation's Democracy Day is like appraising the caricature of an object. The origin of our Democracy can be found in the annulled June 12, 1993 a far more symbolic day than May 29. The election was acclaimed the freest and fairest election in the nation history.

Announcing June 12 as the country Democracy Day is one of the move to Nigerianize the country in recent times. States in the southwest do observe June 12 which made the annulment June 12, 1993 presidential election a regional  affair.

The federal government should be applauded for the move to make the whole federation identify with the Southwestern region which produced the Presdintial candidate of the June 12, 1993 election, late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

In similar development, the running mate of Abiola in the election, Baba Gana Kingibe will also be awarded GCON while the late human rights lawyer, Gani Fawehimi will also be awarded GCON.  This move is a late one but still valid.

God bless Nigeria.
