KINKY, NOT SLEEK.
Because I was up and won't submit,
You thought I was medieval and obstinate.
Because I'm Black and unyielding,
You sought to make me wan and miserable.
You plucked my feathers and clipped my wings
For the love of who you are not.
Because you were blind drunk for them ponytail,
You invaded my territory
Demanding of me obeisance and I'm simply not.
Beautiful it is, my Afro
But the beauty you refused to see
And like a squashed succulent tomato,
You dented my identity.
Tell me, what did you get?
Leaves that dropped before winter.
You thought you knew better?
No you never knew;
Our identities are as beautiful as best for our existence.
