THEME: XENOPHOBIA

ANIEBIET EFFIONG

TITLE: Am Exhausted Of Words,
I Know Not Of What To Pen,
Maybe I Shall Say Something When Am Done.

I Am An African,
Born Into Nigeria,
A Country Of Diverse Language, Culture, Ethnic Group,
But One Race.

I Have Be Shot With Alarcrity,
Haunted Like Animals By Judas Who Call Themselves Brothers,
Like Cain And Abel.

Aboki!
I Thought Your Name Meant 'my Friend',
Why Is Opposite The Case?
When Did Terrorism Become Your Anthem?
When Did Hate Become Your Pledge?

I Wrote This To Those,
Who Mistake My Tears For Sadness,
Instead Of Rage.

Are We Not A Country That Yearned For Equity?
Are We Not A Country That Fought For Equality?
Why Have You Contracted The Disease Of War By Our Masters,
And Swept Peace Under The Carpet?
Why Do You Trade Love For Hate?

My Skin Has Been Burned,
By The Scorching Sun Of Your Hatred.

You Have Turned Me To Those Men,
Who Sang The Lord's Song,
In A Strang Land.

OYEKUNLE IFEOLUWA

TITLE; XENOPHOBIA
(SOUTH AFRICA: THE DEATH OF ME)

I was a wanderer that left
my home in search of hope.
I was a shattered soul that fell
a victim of wild owls.
You could have killed your fear
and spare my soul of brutal death.
I never came to steal your job
but got murdered in cold blood.

You sent my soul on exile
to a land of no return.
The fear of poor foreigners
made you end lives in disgust.
When will you see beyond the sky
to know we have good hearts?
When will prejudice leave your eyes
to see we are all black?

We could have lived in harmony
and be freed of agony.
You should have seen beyond my skin
before you slaughtered me.
I have no teeth like vampires
to pierce your soul to death.
I only left my father land
with hope of meeting friends.

  1. I vote poem 2. It is the relatively better for the theme. The poet, however, should be cautious of direct address or expressions. Such a sensitive topic, I think, needn't straight expressions, and the title and some lines make it very explicit.
